Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is the best time to see the Great Migration?

Short answer is: The best time to see the Great Migration is when we are going! The longer answer is: Mid-July through mid-September is the best time to the Great Migration, and your opportunity of observing a river crossing are generally much higher. Come early October or late September due to climate change, the rainy season in Tanzania will begin, and the herds of wildebeest and zebra will embark on their return journey back to the Serengeti.

What should I pack for the safari?

Pack LIGHT! PS&B will be transporting your bags throughout the safari. Wear your khakis! For once in our lives, we want to blend in with the environment. Opt for earthy colors like khaki and olive lightweight long sleeved shirts. Breathable loose pants. Neutral colored t-shirts. Rain jacket and umbrella in case it rains. Sturdy shoes or sneakers like Clarks, Hokia or Skechers. Plenty of comfortable socks. Sandals. A swimsuit because we will be funning and sunning near hot springs. There is also a pool at the hotel in Arusha. Shorts. But don’t forget to pack fragrance free lotion and plenty of BUG SPRAY! SUNSCREEN! Hat with UV protection. Sunglasses with UV protection. Binoculars. Camera! Portable power packs for those long games. Flashlight.

What safety measures are in place during the safari?

No matter where you go in sub-Saharan Africa, there are rules and regulations you must follow when on safari. These safari safety rules are designed to keep you safe:

a) ALWAYS STAY IN THE VAN, TRUCK OR 4WD – A safari is not a zoo, and its animals will attack and eat you. There have been too many terrible cases of people getting out to try and capture the perfect photo. It always ends badly.

b) NEVER TURN YOUR BACK – the only thing that turns and runs in Africa is prey.

c) ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR SAFARI GUIDE!

d) KEEP YOUR VOICES DOWN – animals scare easily, and you would not want to miss to a pride of lions because you are laughing and/or talking too loudly.

Are there any health and vaccination requirements?

Yes, some vaccines are recommended or required for Tanzania. The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Tanzania: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza. It is recommended that you visit your doctor at least 8 weeks prior to departure for more detailed advice. Some vaccinations are highly recommended for travel to this region of the world. The government of Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever. This situation will apply if you have a 2 or 3 day layover or visit to a country with a risk of yellow fever. However, if you are traveling directly from the United States and transit through another country, it is NOT REQUIRED.

What are the visa and entry requirements for Tanzania?

If you are visiting Tanzania, your passport should be valid for 6 months from the date of arrival. Check with your airline to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirement, especially if you are transferring between flights in Europe, Kenya, Ethiopia or another country. Most foreign passport holders need a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania. Tanzania has an e-visa system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

Monetary Tips

A suggested $50.00 gift can be given to our safari guide at the end of trip. When you are transferred to and from the airport to the hotel, please tip the driver.

How is the weather during the safari dates?

Hopefully, the weather will be beautiful. The average temperature in September is 46F – 75F.

What are the payment terms and cancellation policy?

See deposit and payment plan above. PS&B highly recommends “cancel for any reason” travel insurance. This type of travel insurance allows you to cancel your trip for any reason up to two days prior to your scheduled departure.

Are children allowed on the safari, and are there any age restrictions?

All children under the age of 18 children must be accompanied and supervisor by an adult. The minimum age to participate in this trip is thirteen (13) years old.

How are dietary restrictions handled during the trip?

Let us know your dietary preferences, and we will gladly accommodate you, especially while we are on safari.

Emergency Medical Coverage

Many travel insurance plans also have medical coverage for emergency medical expenses, including the expensive cost of transporting a patient back home if you elect an emergency medical evacuation benefit.
